Upwork Fees in 2026: Service Fees, Connects, and Real Cost Per Client

Freelancer service fees, Connects, boosting, and a simple formula to see what you actually earn per won client.

The fee stack freelancers pay

On top of your quoted rate, Upwork takes a freelancer service fee from contract earnings. You also buy Connects to apply (and sometimes boost). Payment processing and currency conversion can add friction for international freelancers. None of this is hidden — but many people price jobs without adding it up.

Cost per client formula

Estimate: (Connects per win × Connect price) + (boost spend per win) + (platform fee % × project value) + (time cost of proposals sent). Divide by projects won per month. If cost per client is more than 10–15% of a typical project for your niche, tighten job selection before you raise volume.

Price and propose with margin in mind

Use fixed-price economics overrides in your workflow so landing pages and cover letters show totals that match what you intend to charge — not accidental splits from the job post budget alone.

Worked example: $3,000 fixed project

Suppose you win a $3,000 fixed contract. Platform freelancer fees reduce what you keep — exact percentages depend on Upwork’s current fee schedule and contract type. Add $15–$50 of Connects and maybe boost spend to acquire that client. If you sent forty proposals to win one job, divide total Connect cost by forty and add to acquisition cost. The number you care about is net margin after fees and acquisition, not headline project price.

Pricing proposals with fees visible to you

When building milestone totals, enter economics you intend — not scraped job budgets that undercut you. Landing pages and cover letters should reflect the same numbers you are willing to execute for, so clients do not anchor on fantasy pricing.

International freelancers: hidden friction

Currency conversion, withdrawal fees, and local tax reporting can shrink net further than the headline platform fee. Talk to an accountant once you are steady — not because Upwork is unusual, but because freelance net is always lower than gross.
